Monument protection

The goal of monument protection is the preservation of monuments or material cultural assets in all of their multitude and variety. Their historical, artistic, or other cultural significance is a prerequisite for protection.

Monument protection, along with the key tasks of protection, care, research, and communication, is directly administered by the National Heritage Agency (Bundesdenkmalamt), which has branch offices (Landeskonservatorate) in each province of Austria.

Strategic governance in particular comes under the jurisdiction of the Federal Chancellery.
