Education, Youth, Culture and Sport Council

Art. 165 of the Treaty of Lisbon awarded the field of sport a formal and political character at EU level for the first time, and enabled the establishment of new structures at EU level. The ministers of education, culture, youth, the media, communications and sport of all the EU Member States belong to the Education, Youth, Culture and Sport Council (EYCS). The precise composition of the Council depends on the issues which are dealt with at the respective meeting.

The ministers responsible for sport in the Member States meet twice a year (at the end of May and the end of November in Brussels).  Depending on the respective presidency of the Council, informal councils of the sports ministers are also held on a regular basis. In the sports section of the EYCS Council, for the most part conclusions and recommendations are adopted. Essentially, recommendations and Council conclusions are adopted by the Council of sports ministers.
